Knit Picks began in 2002 with the purpose of connecting knitters with a wide selection of yarn, knitting books, needles and accessories at great prices. In 2006, Bob and Kelley Petkun (Knit Picks' Director and Creative Director respectively) applied the same concept to knitting needles. First, they worked closely with a large group of knitters to determine all the features the ideal knitting needle would have. Then, they developed a partnership with a manufacturer who was excited to invest the time and engineering expertise necessary to make the dream knitting needle come true.
Knit Picks' nickel-plated glass-like surface allows your stitches to move freely while the hollow brass tube is extremely lightweight for hours of comfortable knitting. The sharp, gradually tapered knitting needle points make working stitches a breeze, slipping easily between stitches so even complicated cables move along quickly. The smooth cable join lets your stitches slide around your knitting needles with no snags. The long threaded join along with the tightening hole make for extra security that the cables and tips of the knitting needles will stay connected. And the flexible cable has very little memory so you can start knitting immediately. Simply unscrew the needle tips and screw on the cable caps to keep your knitting safe when your needle tips are required elsewhere. Lace knitters will love that they can tie a piece of scrap yarn through the tiny hole in the cable end (used for the tightening key) and thread a lifeline through their lace at regular intervals while they are knitting.
Knit Picks has very high standards for the international manufacturers they choose to work with. Executives from Knit Picks have visited each of their manufacturers' factories personally to ensure that their facilities and labor practices are in line with both Knit Picks and their customers expectations.
Specifically, Knit Picks works only with manufacturers who:
- Institute management practices that respect the rights of all employees - Provide a safe and healthy work place - Promote the health and well-being of all employees - Oppose the use of child labour - Have an active role in the positive development of their local community
